Data backups are ideally never needed - or at most only for peace of mind. If the worst comes to the worst, however, data backups are irreplaceable and the loss can generally not be put into figures. In the film industry in particular a lot of material can never be reproduced.
The possible causes for loss of data are manifold: e.g. hardware faults, viruses, theft and natural disasters. Even if precautionary measures are in place for each of these situations, backing up data is and remains the most effective means of protecting your work from total loss.
